Joshua Werner Returns to Artful Gathering

Registration and Enrollment is buzzing at the Artful Gathering Online Art Retreat as students hurry to choose their classes at www.ArtfulGathering.com before Session 2 starts up this Saturday, July 16th.
Returning for a second year is instructor Joshua Werner, teaching a unique workshop titled 'Without Words: Storytelling Through Sequential Art'.

"I'm very excited to be returning to Artful Gathering and the amazing art community that's developed there," says professional illustrator Joshua Werner. "It's been a very busy year for me so far, with a lot of projects in development, but what's great about this is I get to share my enthusiasm for all that I'm doing with my students. While I help guide them through their own process as they watch the class videos, I also get to show them some of the work that I'm doing presently and how it relates to the Artful Gathering project."
For those unfamiliar with Artful Gathering, it's an annual online art retreat. Every summer it's a chance for people to tap into their creative side and learn how to do something new, at their own pace, in the comfort of their own home, but with step-by-step guidance from an expert via a series of comprehensive videos. The key aspect that makes Artful Gathering so unique is that the students have a direct line of communication to that instructor during the whole session, so they can ask questions, show their progress, and get critiques and advice.

"I'm teaching a workshop called Without Words this year, which is half focused on drawing and half focused on storytelling and hand-making your own book," says Werner. "Coming from a background of book illustration, writing, publishing, and comic book illustrating, I have a lot to offer in guiding people through the steps of telling a visual story. But what's fun about this class is I cut out all of the dry technical stuff as well as the digital end of things. This class is all about getting your hands dirty and making your very own physical book without ever touching a computer!" Except, of course, to enter your classroom, watch your class videos, and interact with your instructor. In addition to the hands-on crafting appeal of Josh's class is a unique approach to teaching sequential art. In the class students will create and script a story that, as the class title implies, has no words. That means no dialogue and no narration. The pictures have to tell the complete story. "It's a bit of a challenge," he says, "but it's a lot of fun to tackle this approach to storytelling. And I go in-depth on things like body language and transitional scenes and pacing. I make sure it's very accessible, anyone can do take this class and do this."

After working right along side the class videos and the direct digital classroom interactions with Josh, students will end up with a one-of-a-kind handmade book full of original art, which makes for an incredible keepsake, gift, or even family heirloom to pass down.
Students curious about Without Words or any of the other Session 2 Artful Gathering workshops being offered need to first be registered to attend, a very quick process on their website that only costs $5 and then gives them access to the private event website along with all sorts of free content, door prizes, sponsor-related activities, and more. From there they can look over the classes being offered and decide which ones are right for them. But hurry! Online classes start this Saturday! Don't worry about being a few days late to join in though, the Artful Gathering setup allows you to work at your own pace.
